This story is about a great forest, property of the Abbey de l’Epau, covering our region.
In this forest, the monks had employed lumbermen from the Savoie region. It was hard work for these men, and they needed nourishing food... Their main meal was composed of a sort of omelette with potatoes and bacon, a recipe from their mountains.
The called it “Mat la faim”, or “hunger killer”, and with an accent from Savoie, the result would be something like « Mat la Fan ».
Several centuries went by, and words, just like places, changed or disappeared.
The forest disappeared and “Mat la Fan” became “Mattefeux”.
Alain Souffront was inspired by this old story when picking a name for his restaurant; he chose a symbolic one and called the place « Auberge des Matfeux » in 1962.
Ideally located, close to town and to the 24 heures du Mans circuit, the establishment offers a beautiful view out to the park. Xavier Souffront naturally took over after his father and he allows the tradition of good cuisine to live on, making this one of the oldest restaurants around Le Mans.
Corinne, the hostess, is in charge of the service and will give a warm welcome to travellers and to ideal gourmet guests.
The menu, specially composed for ideal gourmet, is festive and will allow you to appreciate an authentic regional cuisine.
The wine is at discretion, but beware of abuses...
Bon appétit !
